The studio of artist-meets-designer, Naomi Wallens a.k.a SHY GUY offers a fantastical mix of Blade Runner toymaker, J F Sebastian’s Off World studio of curiosities and the late Neon Godfather, Chris Bracey’s God’s Own Junkyard. In a converted pub in London, Naomi has built a world of Design meets Art wonders that sit firmly between the worlds of Street Art, Punk, Rock n Roll and Fetish, providing a disruptive reaction to the more orthodox products of contemporary Objet D’Art.
SHY GUY is the alter ego Naomi developed to reveal an avalanche of creativity to unfold in a more outspoken, enigmatic and out-there manner than she would have dared to add to her practice before. Naomi is inspired by diverse references, from the work of fashion oracles, Alexander McQueen and Pam Hogg to Søren Aabye Kierkegaard’s theory on the Age of Reflection which culturally resonates with the white noise of news, entertainment and social media of today.
In Naomi’s works, one can see a multitude of influences and technical skill honed through the tutorage she gained from street artist, Hutch, which also saw her create her own street art. Fantasy, personal experience and hard graft is what has seen Naomi transform and breathe new life in to found objects and furniture, in her own signature style. Naomi’s works double up as down-the-rabbit-hole narratives, her toymaker meets story teller trademarks complementing all of her works with sassy and humorous titles to match. Naomi’s debut solo show launches during Clerkenwell Design Week, 2018.
